The Garrett Foundation: Building Stronger Inner-City Communities

The Garrett Foundation

Breaking Ground Where Equity Begins

The Garrett Foundation is more than a nonprofit. It’s a movement. Founded by Twyla Garrett, our 501(c)(3) is laser-focused on creating generational change in underserved inner-city communities—brick by brick, policy by policy, person by person.

Our work centers around three transformational pillars:

  • Homeownership as Empowerment

  • Access to Dignity: Sanitary Equity

  • Food Justice through Neighborhood Design

Together, these pillars don’t just support communities. They rebuild them—with resilience, equity, and opportunity at the core.

Pillar One: From Section 8 to Stability – Building Homeowners

We believe in the power of ownership over survival. That’s why we help families transition from rental assistance to homeownership—turning temporary shelter into long-term wealth.

Our approach includes:

  • First-time buyer education & financial literacy

  • Partnerships with local housing authorities

  • Down-payment assistance programs

  • Mentorship for new homeowners

Owning a home isn’t just about keys—it’s about legacy.

Pillar Two: Dignity in Every School – Sanitary Equity Matters

No student should have to choose between their period and their education. We provide free, reliable access to sanitary products in inner-city schools—ensuring young women show up, stay focused, and succeed without shame or barriers.

We work with:

  • School districts & administrators

  • Community health partners

  • Volunteers & donors

Health. Dignity. Access. That’s equity in action.

Pillar Three: Fresh Food Is a Right – Not a Privilege

Food deserts aren't just inconvenient—they're dangerous. We eliminate them by embedding full-service grocery stores inside mixed-use housing developments, and supporting community-owned co-ops that bring nutrition and ownership back to the block.

Our impact includes:

  • Mixed-use development planning with integrated retail

  • Start-up grants for local grocers & co-ops

  • Public-private partnerships with supermarket chains

  • Accessibility solutions (transit, pricing, delivery)

We’re turning deserts into ecosystems of health, jobs, and pride.

Housing Development:

Equity, Design & Resilience

Our mission in housing isn’t just to build—it’s to transform. We create affordable, inclusive, and sustainable housing that lifts entire communities out of crisis and into opportunity.

What we build includes:

  • Affordable homes and community spaces

  • Crisis response and transitional housing

  • Design rooted in accessibility, sustainability, and beauty

  • Partnerships that drive funding and policy change

  • Services like job training, financial counseling, and youth programs

We don’t just hand over keys—we invest in futures.

Our Impact: What We Measure, We Multiply

We track outcomes, not just outputs:

  • Rise in first-time homeownership rates

  • Increased school attendance linked to sanitary access

  • Reduction of food insecurity in newly served areas

  • Community job creation through co-op grocers

Impact isn’t a goal. It’s our blueprint.
